Institut de Soudure and its subsidiary Institut de Soudure Industrie, provide their services to the entire industry. Its activities are focussed on five areas:

- Inspection of industrial equipment during manufacturing and in service (conventional and high-tech methods);

- Inspection of equipment, new or in service, including pressurised equipment whose manufacture and monitoring in service are subject to regulation (IS is approved to give a ruling on the compliance of pressurised equipment);

- Expertise on equipment, design, welding consultancy;

- Professional training in welding and non destructive testing (NDT);

- Research and higher education: Institut de Soudure, which is also a French Technical Centre for welding, incorporates three hubs dedicated to assembly, mechanical analysis of equipment and NDT. It also provides two training schools for welding specialisation (ESSA and EAPS).

In 2008, with 15% of its turnover provided by the international sector, Institut de Soudure is reinforcing its commitments outside France. Today, it has 8 centres overseas: Morocco, Iran, Qatar, Abu-Dhabi, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, in addition to the agencies in the French overseas territories: Martinique, French Guyana and New Caledonia. These facilities, plus the roving international teams, allow IS to offer a local service to both national industries and international groups.
