 Institut de Soudure presents its offer on microanalysis by EDS WDS spectrometry

 Did you know that the Expertise, Consultation, Calculation and Design activity has a latest generation scanning electron microscope and two EDS and WDS spectrometers?

At Villepinte (Seine-Saint-Denis), Institut de Soudure has a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Jeol brand - the first in the JSM-6610LV series installed in France - with two detectors of secondary electrons (SE) and backscattered electrons (BE).

As a further investigation tool, this equipment is extremely useful for surveys entrusted to the Expertise, Consultation, Calculation and Design function, in the case of part failure analyses, when carrying out the following :

fractographic analyses on break surfaces;

elementary chemical analyses of samples and deposits;

X-ray mapping.

The SEM is equipped with two spectrometers from Oxford Instruments, one wavelength dispersive with five crystals (WDS for Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer) and the other energy dispersive (EDS for Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer).

The SEM room accepts samples up to 200 mm in diameter and 50 mm in height.

With this complete configuration of the SEM and its two spectrometers, fully automated and programmable, Institut de Soudure is able to obtain high quality imaging, with enlargements up to 50,000 times, or even 100,000 times.

The WDS detector – also known as Castaing's probe - authorizes a quantitative chemical analysis of light elements such as boron, nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine, with finer detection and resolution of lines compared with the EDS detector on its own.

From now on, even with samples that have little or no conductivity, fractographic analyses and phases analyses are possible, by means of switching over to degraded vacuum mode and to the ER detector.
