Visual inspection of inaccessible areas : combining prescriptive and safety aspects

Institut de Soudure Industrie is able to handle the inspection and control phases, in strict compliance with prescriptive and safety aspects.

In the context of the "Plan for modernization of industrial installations", operators are asked to carry out visual inspections of inaccessible areas, as close as possible to the structure, in particular on frames and shells of storage tanks and spheres. Institut de Soudure Industrie is able to handle the inspection and control phases, in strict compliance with prescriptive and safety aspects.

In order to carry out such inspections with full guarantees, Institut de Soudure Industrie has personnel who are skilled in both areas: they are qualified to carry out inspections and trained on rope access work. Such visual inspections may, on request, be combined with other maintenance tasks. This approach also aims to optimize the duration and costs of any such operations.

We should remember that the NF EN ISO 17637 standard "Non destructive testing of welded assemblies – Visual inspection of fusion-welded assemblies", revised in May 2011, makes it necessary to carry out visual inspections at a distance of less than 600 mm from the surface to be observed and at an angle of not less than 30 degrees. Lighting of the surface must be at a minimum of 350 lux. However, a value of 500 lux is recommended.

Remote inspection using mirrors, endoscopes, optical fibers or video cameras must be envisaged only when it is not possible to obtain accessibility for the visual inspection indicated above or else when this practice is required by a regulatory standard.

Such prescriptive requirements necessitate the use of either scaffolding, or rope access work.

Non compliance, means exposing all those involved: service providers, prime contractors and operators, not only to industrial and environmental risks but also to legal risks, whether during construction, manufacture or maintenance.
