Evaluating of the possibilities of crack propagation under fatigue, through the simulation of future operating cycles

​The year 2010 was marked by important business, where the Investigations, Consultancy, Stress Calculations and Design (E3C) division intervened as the coordinator within Institut de Soudure. Our oil and gas distribution customers entrusted us with the investigation of crack indications, for example on longitudinal welds of tubes (revelation of the mechanisms of fatigue-corrosion). Service included stress calculations of the critical size of cracks in fracture mechanics and the evaluation of the possibilities of crack propagation under fatigue, through the simulation of future operating cycles.

 

Our teams at the technological laboratory in Yutz performed fatigue tests on sample pipeline segments, to follow real and artificial crack propagation, as well as rupture and pressurization tests, so as to determine rupture pressure. The IS Experts department also perfected the techniques for the external testing of longitudinal welds, essentially based on the Phased Array technique. A joining procedure, to be used in the event of repairs with a new segment on an older crack-bearing one, was validated by mechanical tests, destructive tests and pressurization rupture tests of the shells.
