Developing a solution which combined know-how and astuteness, to conduct periodic inspection of a polypropylene storage sphere.

Institut de Soudure Industrie developed a solution which combined know-how and astuteness, to conduct periodic inspection of an 18-metre-diameter polypropylene storage sphere with a fire-retardant coating, at Polimeri Europa in Dunkirk, on behalf of ASAP. Our team worked from inside: by rope access,  moving around the sphere tank in a dinghy, testing the walls progressively emptying the sphere tank, thus avoiding the use of scaffolding and the destruction of the insulation. A pneumatic winch  usable in an explosive environment (ATEX), attached to the descending tripod enabled the inspectors to go down and to conduct thickness measurements by continuous ultrasound.

The total inspection required 57 trips along the internal wall, as the water level dropped.
